WESTHAMPTON – Climate change is an issue that’s of great importance for people around the world and the Pioneer Valley. It’s also something that 9-year-old Freja Redwin is concerned about, which is why she’s raising money for a second consecutive year for 350.org.
“You don’t worry so much when you’re doing something about it,” Redwin said.
Redwin began her fundraising last year when she raised $200 for 350.org by selling daffodils in a collaboration with other children. She selected the organization, which seeks to stop new fossil fuel projects and promote renewable energy, after doing some research.
“This year I’m trying to do as much as I can,” Redwin said.
Redwin met her goal of raising $350 already on April 19 at the Tuesday Market in Northampton, when she sold $338 worth of crafts and daffodils and received the remaining money as a donation from a family friend. She’s also doing this fundraising work as a team with her friends Maggie, George and Teddy Overtree.
“We made everything ourselves except for the daffodils,” Redwin said.
As for the daffodils, they were grown on the homestead that Redwin lives on in Westhampton.
“I feel proud,” said Pandora Redwin, Redwin’s mother. “Gives me some hope.”
Redwin scheduled a sale at the Unitarian Universalist Church on April 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. She is also looking to have people match what she’s raising, and plans to sell daffodils to local florists as well.
“She’s really excited about the idea of people joining her,” said Pandora Redwin.
