WEST SPRINGFIELD — After going through a three-game gauntlet of some of the best football teams in western Massachusetts, the inexperienced Northampton football team is licking its wounds.

The Blue Devils faced West Springfield Friday night and lost 49-0.

The offense could not sustain drives and the defense could not stop the Terriers’ versatile offense.

Northampton (2-3, 0-2) got a first-hand look at Vaunell Hill, a powerful straight ahead runner with deceptive speed. Hill rumbled his way to 143 yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns.

West Springfield quarterback Tyler Rochefort showed why he is one of the better players in western Mass., hurting the Blue Devils with the run and the pass.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils went to Andy Grygorcewicz at quarterback after starting with sophomore Tom Jacques.

Northampton’s first two drives under the lights at Clark Field did not produce a first down.

After making the switch, Grygorcewicz completed consecutive passes of 20 and 27 yards to Braeden Tudryn and Jake Brittain, respectively.

After a penalty, the drive ended with a turnover on downs at West Springfield’s 24-yard line. The Blue Devils did not threaten again.

Jacques went 3-for-10 while Grygorcewicz completed two passes on six attempts with two interceptions.

Ben Fowler had a 27-yard reception for Northampton. Grygorcewicz had an interception for the defense, and Jasper Price-Slade sacked Rochefort to end a West Springfield (4-1, 2-0 Suburban South) drive before the end of the half.

West Springfield’s first drive ended with a Rochefort 54-yard touchdown throw to Leeony Tessier.

On the play, Tessier had 15 yards on the closest Northampton defender.

With 3 minutes, 1 second left in the first quarter, Hill scored from 13 yards out for his first touchdown.

Rochefort connected with the elusive Cam Paier from 25yards out for another score in the second quarter.

Rochefort later scored on a keeper from 25 yards out to make it 28-0.

Hill added two touchdowns in the third quarter before he came out of the game for Ridvan Azizov.

Azizov added a 5-yard touchdown to end the scoring.
