BELCHERTOWN — A structure fire closed Rockrimmon Road for two hours Friday morning and heavily damaged a home.
No injuries were reported.
A passing motorist or neighbor noticed smoke at 228 Rockrimmon Road and called for help, according to Fire Chief Edward F. Bock.
Fire officials received the call at 7:20 a.m. and were on scene within 10 minutes, according to Bock.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and the homeowner does not currently live in the house, according to Bock. The home is undergoing renovations, he said.
When crews arrived on scene there was a lot of smoke and there was fire coming out of the back windows of the home, said Bock, who described the fire as “pretty involved.”
The fire department had to truck in water to fight the fire, as there were no nearby hydrants.
Firefighters made “several aggressive interior attacks” against the flames on the first floor and basement. On the second floor, they went in through windows because the stairwell was burned, Bock said.
The fire took 45 minutes to get under control, and crews have remained to deal with hot spots.
Shortly after 9 a.m., firefighters were on the roof of the home dealing with the remains of the fire.
Crews were on scene until about 2:15 p.m. when the home was turned over to an insurance inspector, according to Bock.
“We really didn’t make a full determination as to what caused the fire,” Bock said Friday afternoon. “[It is] still considered undetermined, most likely accidental but it is not a suspicious origin.”
The home sustained “very heavy structural damage” estimated to be around $200,000, according to Bock.
Rockrimmon Road reopened to traffic shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Mutual aid from Granby and Ludlow assisted with the fire fight.
