NORTHAMPTON — Prominent LGBTQ activist and Emmy-Award-winning entertainer Laverne Cox will speak at Smith College in coming weeks, an event that was previously postponed last month.

Cox is expected to take the stage 7 p.m., April 17 at John M. Greene Hall. Those who still have tickets for the original March 8 event, which was rescheduled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” according to the college, may present them for admission to the event. The general public may also purchase tickets here.

Cox, who will also participate in a moderated question-and-answer session after the talk, will reflect on her own experiences while addressing how the intersections of race, class and gender affect women of color who identify as transgender. Questions can be submitted here.

The question-and-answer portion will be led by Jennifer DeClue, assistant professor of the study of women and gender at Smith.

Cox, who in 2014 became the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Emmy, has drawn international critical acclaim for her role of Sophia Burset on the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.”

Cox’s work has also drawn nods from the Screen Actors Guild, the NAACP Image Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
