WHATELY — Corrina M. Carr, 41, of Springfield, Vt., was charged with drug trafficking in Greenfield District Court Thursday after police discovered 901 wax bags of suspected heroin in the vehicle she was traveling in.

Carr was a passenger in a red Ford F-150 driven by Lorri Page, also of Springfield, Vt. Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kurt D’Angelo of the Northampton barracks stopped the vehicle at 4:40 p.m. near the 36-mile marker on Interstate 91 north in Whately for an obscured license plate, which was covered with dirt.

According to D’Angelo’s report, the two claimed to be traveling home to Springfield, Vt. from the Holyoke area after dropping off a car battery with Carr’s brother. However, their behavior caught D’Angelo’s attention.

“Carr seemed to be talking about nothing, which through my experience someone does when they are extremely nervous or anxious,” D’Angelo’s report reads. “Carr was extremely fidgety and wouldn’t stop moving or twitching … Whenever Carr spoke, Page would remain completely still and had a cold stare on her face, almost like she was in immense fear.”

Background checks on the two women found that Page had drug possession charges against her in Florida and New Hampshire. Carr was previously found guilty in Greenfield District Court of possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug, and had various other drug charges in Massachusetts and out of state.

According to the report, D’Angelo separated the two, and asked Carr if there was anything in the vehicle that would harm him. Carr eventually admitted to having a hypodermic needle and spoon. Under the seat, D’Angelo discovered two packs of hypodermic needles, a spoon with residue and a cotton ball. She denied having any drugs.

Trooper Matthew Swindlehurst arrived to assist, and D’Angelo questioned Page — who was sitting in his cruiser — about the needles. Page said the needles were hers, and that she had two bundles of heroin given to her by Carr.

During a pat frisk of Carr, the troopers discovered multiple bundles of wax bags in her shirt pocket, the report continues.

Carr was arrested and taken to the Northampton State Police barracks on charges of possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug and failure to wear a seat belt. Page was advised she would receive a summons for possession of a Class A drug, and also received a citation for improperly displaying a license plate.

Upon arrival at the barracks, Carr told police about three more bags of heroin she had kicked under the seat. In all, 901 wax bags of suspected heroin was retrieved from Carr’s person, the cruiser and the pickup.

Following her arraignment Thursday morning, Carr is being held, with bail set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 surety. She will return to court for a pretrial conference Feb. 1.
