HATFIELD — A $480,000 project aimed at reducing energy consumption at the town’s wastewater treatment facility and lowering the cost of disposing sludge comes before a special Town Meeting Nov. 29.
Discussion of the two-article warrant begins at 7 p.m. at the Hatfield Elementary School auditorium.
The meeting is prompted by the need to appropriate the full amount for the project, which will preserve a $200,000 grant the town previously received from the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, said Town Administrator Marlene Michonski.
The first article asks residents to authorize borrowing, which needs a two-thirds majority. The project, which will convert an aerobic sludge digester to a sludge gravity thickener, has to be completed by June, Michonski said.
DPC Engineering, LLC of Longmeadow, which is handling a wastewater management plan evaluating Hatfield’s sanitary sewers, pump stations and the wastewater treatment facility, made the recommendation for the improvement.
The second article will amend the fiscal year 2019 budget by adding $13,600 to the budget line for interest payments. That is the estimated cost associated with borrowing for the project.
