NORTHAMPTON — A seven-car accident on King Street reported Thursday was caused by a Greenfield driver running a red light, according to information newly released by police Friday.

Tony Mason of Greenfield ran a red light while westbound on Damon Road, where he struck the car of Brian Kovalsick of Turners Falls, according to police. After colliding, Mason’s car continued on to strike three more cars and Kovalsick’s car continued on to hit an additional vehicle.

Mason will be cited for failure to obey traffic signals, according to police.

The accident, which took place shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday, clogged up the four-way King Street intersection with Bridge Road and Damon Road into the afternoon, according to police.

Police said the names of the other five drivers are: Elizabeth Poudrier of Northampton, Stephanie Slysz of Hatfield, Sally Boutiette of Conway, Gina Gromada of Easthampton, and Gary Kostek and Southampton.

Four of the drivers — Mason, Kovalsick, Poudrier and Slysz — were treated and released from Cooley Dickinson Hospital for what were believed to be minor injuries, police and the hospital confirmed Friday morning.

Police did not release the who else was injured in the crash. Originally, police said eight people were injured in the accident.
