EASTHAMPTON — Police are trying to determine who struck a bicyclist and then left the scene in downtown Easthampton on Thursday.

A bicyclist was crossing the intersection of Main and Union streets about 9:20 p.m. when he was struck by what he described as a gray minivan. The man fell off his bike and landed on his back, according to Officer Chad Alexander.

A man and a woman got out of the vehicle and asked if they could do anything to help the bicyclist before getting back into the vehicle and making a U-turn in the direction of the rotary, the injured man told police.

The man was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital after complaining to first responders about back pain, Alexander said.

Police later identified a van matching that description that belonged to a woman in her 60s. The woman told police that she was sleeping, though her grandson may have been using the car, Alexander said.

The grandson admitted to being in that area around the time of the crash, though his statements did not make sense before he decided he wanted to stop speaking to the police, Alexander said.

Police are reviewing footage from cameras at area businesses as part of the investigation.
