■Hampshire College has received 2,002 applications from 41 states for the 250 places in its first class, Van R. Halsey Jr., director of admissions, reported today. Of the 250 first-year students, approximately half are women.
■Bjorn S. Wiberg will join the Hampshire Regional YMCA staff on July 6 as assistant executive-physical, it was announced by Kimball Howes, chairman of the personnel committee. Wiberg is currently serving as the physical director of the Central Branch YMCA, Detroit.
■About 400 Christians put their feet to the pavement Saturday for the first March for Jesus in the city of Northampton, an event one participant said gave “visible expression of an eternal truth.” The group wound their way from the parking lot on the Three-County Fairgrounds to Pulaski Park.
■Although barely a year old, Carousel Books, located at 34 Bridge St. across the street from the Northampton Post Office, is closing its doors at the end of June. “We weren’t getting the kind of traffic we needed,” said co-owner John McDowell.
■The Blue Heron restaurant in Sunderland hosted the wedding Monday of “Glee” star Jane Lynch and psychiatrist Lara Embry, according to news sources. The couple lives in California, but traveled to Massachusetts, where same-sex marriage is permitted, to tie the knot.
■A former gas station at King and Barrett streets has been torn down in recent weeks in preparation for construction of a new branch for PeoplesBank. The Holyoke-based bank bought the nearly 1-acre parcel almost two years ago with plans to erect a full-service branch in the city in the next few years.
