The Gazette’s editorial of Sept. 10 leaves out several details that provide lingering unanswered questions for the residents of Amherst, especially the taxpayers who will ultimately absorb the costs of the settlement with former Superintendent Maria Geryk.
Personally, I don’t think the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee has been held accountable โย as yet โย for what happened. As someone who works in high-conflict situations daily, I was very surprised by member Vira ย Douangmany Cage’s reported statement, “Bring it on,” in response to Ms. Geryk’s demand letter.
Usually people initially try to mediate disputes in a friendly manner. Where is the record that they engaged in this process?
I noted that another board member resigned citing the dysfunction of the committee, and I note the report that member Trevor Baptiste either supported or allowed the reading of a petition to overturn the stay-away order against a parent.
I also note โย as the Gazette states โย that Maria Geryk had a “laudatory” record before this dispute. I am very troubled by the committee’s performance and look forward to the future unfolding of this story.
We shouldn’t just move forward without better understanding if we have a functioning committee.
