Bad roads damage cars: tires, shocks, struts, exhaust systems, etc. They force us to make large and unnecessary repairs. Websites cite 20 different systems that are damaged by poor roads and potholes. Repair costs are high ranging from about $200 for a blown out tire to at least $3,500 for a full suspension. Then add elevated insurance premiums and the stress of driving on unpredictable poorly maintained roads.
In 2022, The Amherst Indy ranked Amherst the state’s sixth worst among towns in fiscal year general fund resources allotted to road repair. In 2025, Amherst sank to the bottom of the state’s 351 towns. The town engineers’ March 2025 report states that 29% of Amherst roads are in “very poor” condition. Taxpayers want improved safety and property values, reduced car accidents and repairs, longer-lasting cars, and the peace of mind that comes with quality roads. It’s time that our Town Council addresses this long-standing issue. One action step is to schedule a town meeting specifically to hear from your constituents on this vital topic. Alternatively, address it at the beginning of the next Town Meeting. Please allocate more resources to our roads.
