BUCKLAND — Four teams gathered at Mohawk Trail Regional High School for a quad meet on Wednesday afternoon, as Hampshire Regional, Belchertown and McCann Tech all competed against each other and the host Warriors at the 2.55-mile course around the school.

On the boys side, Belchertown defeated Mohawk Trail 25-36 and beat McCann Tech 15-50, while Hampshire also picked up wins over the Warriors (21-40) and Hornets (15-50), which left just the Orioles and Raiders to settle which team would head home a perfect 3-0 on the day.

It was Hampshire that came out on top, winning 15-42 to cap off a stellar afternoon of racing.

For the girls, it was more of the same. The Raiders defeated Mohawk Trail 21-38, McCann Tech 15-50 and Belchertown 15-50 in dominant fashion. Belchertown fell 18-39 to the Warriors and picked up a 21-38 triumph over the Hornets to close out Hampshire County scoring on Wednesday.

As for race results, Mohawk Trail’s Peter Healy won the race in a dazzling time of 15:16. Eight of the other nine racers in the top 10 belonged to either Belchertown or Hampshire.

For the Raiders, Owen Cubi (15:31.4) placed second, Oscar Schiff (15:32.6) took home third, Hobbes O’Sullivan (15:46.7) snagged fifth place, Augustus Niswonger (15:47.5) crossed the line seventh and Aidan Conklin (16:03.9) placed 10th.

Belchertown had three runners in the top 10, with Cian Lindsay (16:07.8), Emmett Howard  (16:11.3) and Ryan Toner (16:12.3) finishing 8th-10th, respectively.

The girls race was won by Anya Read (18:11.6) of the Warriors.

Hampshire placed an impressive seven runners in the top 10. Ada Corner (second, 18:17.3), Alex Henrichon (third, 18:29.3), Brooke Hockenberry (fourth, 18:36.5), Charlotte Letendre  (fifth, 18:40.4), Kathleen Barry (seventh, 19:13.4), Charlotte Niswonger (ninth, 19:44.2) and Amelia Perry (10th, 19:45.5) all raced well in the Raiders’ win.

Belchertown was led by Serena Jones, who finished 13th with a time of 20:11.2.

Smith Vocational 15, Pioneer 50
Smith Vocational 15, Turners Falls 50 (girls) —
Sicily Chase turned in the team’s best performance on Wednesday afternoon, as she crossed the 2.5-mile course in 20:04 to pace the Vikings.

Other top 10 runners for Smith Voc included Lillian Malloy (fifth, 22:56), Mia Marcinac (sixth, 24:51), Sam Pen (ninth, 29:00) and Alex Peters (10th, 29:11).

Neither Smith Voc, Turners Falls nor Pioneer had enough boys runners to score.

Frontier 25, Southwick 31 (boys)
Frontier 15, Southwick 48 (girls) —
Evan Hedlund (18:11.1) won the boys race while Louise Flagollet (22:46) took first in the girls race as the Redhawks picked up a pair of wins over the Rams on Wednesday afternoon.

On the boys side, Luke Howard was right on Hedlund’s heels with a second-place finish in 18:11.5. Dean Gray (sixth, 19:11), Adam Paul (seventh, 19:35) and Hengxi Due (ninth, 21:24) rounded out Frontier’s top five finishers.

For the girls, it was Liv Christensen and Maddie Antes joining Flagollet in the top three. Christensen finished in 22:45 and Antes crossed the line in 23:25. Maia Christensen (fourth, 23:31) and Phoebe Radner (fifth, 23:40) rounded out the Redhawks top five.

Gateway 15, Palmer 50
Gateway 15, Hampden Charter 50 (girls) —
The Gators continued their dominant start to the fall on Wednesday, as they improved to 4-0 in the Pioneer League South with two more victories.

Anya Niles won the race with a time of 24:45, nearly an entire four minutes faster than the rest of the field. Autumn Clark (28:32) took second with Lily Peloquin (28:33) close behind, and Charlotte Hansen (28:45) and Savannah Petersen (28:56) rounded out the Gateway-filled top five.

Gateway 21, Hampden Charter 34
Palmer 27, Gateway 28 —
The Gators almost pulled off the perfect sweep, but were edged out by one to the Panthers. Still, it was a solid day of running by Gateway led by Jacob Maynard’s second-place finish in 21:34.

Steven Savoy (third, 23:06) and Adam Forgue (four, 24:19) also raced well for the Gators.

Easthampton 20, Westfield Tech 35 (girls)
Easthampton 24, Westfield Tech 31 (boys) —
Gwen Banz led the way for the Eagles girls as her time of 23:25 was good enough for second place. Other Easthampton top 10 finishers included Amelia Dodge (fourth, 24:09), Fern Stauffer (fifth, 24:35), Liana Leiva (eighth, 25:46) and Sabine Richie (ninth, 27:00) to help the team to a win at Stanley Park in Westfield.

On the boys side, it was William Jourdain grabbing the team’s best time — turning in a 19:51 mark to take fourth. Otto Ewing (10th, 20:27) and Otto Koen (16th, 21:54) also raced well for the Eagles in victory.

PVCICS 19, Pope Francis 41
PVCICS 26, Greenfield 31 (boys) —
The Dragons boys swept the meet to remain undefeated. Grafton Tolopko finished first in 17:07, RJ Allen was fifth overall (18:29), with Ayden Klatte taking seventh (18:51), Kristof Knyt finishing eighth (18:51) and Asa Taggert crossing the line ninth at 19:01.

PVCICS 18, Pope Francis 42
PVCICS 15 Greenfield 50 (girls) —
The PVCICS girls dominated both Greenfield and Pope Francis with Ella Maier taking first overall (21:39), Eunice Lo second overall (21:56), Astrid Knyt in 4th (23:03), Adelaide Amias in fifth (23:21) and Cathy Chang rounding out the Dragons’ top five in sixth place (24:12).

Northampton 18, Springfield Central 43 (girls) — The Blue Devils had no trouble with the Golden Eagles on Wednesday afternoon, as they cruised to a decisive win behind Charlotte Shimpach’s time of 22:23.

Mia Levy (22.54), Zea Meerbergen (23:11), Mia Jones (25:11) and Ginny Sidoti (25:16) all raced well for Northampton.

Boys soccer

Monson 6, Smith Academy 3 — Jason Fahmy scored a pair of goals and Nathan Maloney added another, but the Falcons’ defense couldn’t stop the potent Mustangs attack on Wednesday.

Smith Academy trailed 4-2 at halftime and competed tough in the second half, but ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Monson’s scoring.

Pope Francis 1, Belchertown 1 — The Orioles worked to a 1-1 draw with the Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon in Belchertown. Jacob Gladu scored the Belchertown goal, Chase Connor picked up the assist while Luke Dudek made six saves in the box.

Pope Francis has still yet to suffer a loss as it is now 2-0-4, while the Os are 3-2-1. Both teams will meet again later on this fall in another Smith League bout.

South Hadley 1, Chicopee Comp 0 — Matt Gillis scored the lone goal, and it was all the Tigers needed to pull out a W under the lights in Chicopee on Wednesday.

South Hadley picks up the huge Holley League victory to improve to 2-3-1 on the year.

Field hockey

Belchertown 5, Hampshire 0 — A whopping 25 shots on goal for the Orioles led to five scores as they shutout the Raiders to improve to 5-0-1 and make it now six games without a loss to start the season.

Kian Roy scored twice as did Kina Roy for Belchertown. Julia Rainaud tallied a goal while Edith Audette played facilitator with a game-high three assists. Lila Roy made two saves to earn the shutout in goal.

Raeghan Koske stopped 20 shots in goal in an impressive effort.

Frontier 8, Turners Falls 0 — Macy DeMaio and Isabel Orrell each scored two goals as part of a day in which the Redhawks had seven different players record a point in the blowout win over the Thunder on Wednesday.

Amelia Bouchard, Haly Doucette-Kaplan, Ashlie Galenski and Rowan Reilly each tallied a goal while Reilly (two), Orrell (two) and Nora Sloan dished out assists in the win.

Girls volleyball

South Hadley 3, Ware 0 — The Tigers picked up a third win in their last four matches with a sweep of Ware on the road on Wednesday.

South Hadley is now 4-4 and has the rest of the week off before playing Chicopee Comp on Sept. 22.

Golf

Belchertown 153, Amherst 188 — A fantastic round of 32 highlighted Wednesday’s match between two Hampshire County teams, as Orioles senior Michael Murray blitzed the field with a 4-under round at Cold Spring Country Club.

Andrew Wright turned in a 39 while Luke Heroux and Collin Laragy each shot a 41 for Belchertown.

Ben Scott (43), Graham Van Giessen (44), Alex Zakashansky (50) and Callum Bohne (51) scored for Amherst.

Hopkins 167, Smith Vocational 181 — Ryley Regan shot an even-par round of 36 to lead the Golden Hawks to a win on Wednesday afternoon at Westover Golf Course. Aiden Keeling-Lococo (39) broke 40 for the second straight day, Chace Earle added a 46 and Laney Crutch also shot a 46 for Hopkins.

The Vikings’ four scorers were Pat Dabrowski (42), Andrew Persaud (45), Keller McMahon (46) and Coner Braunschweig or RJ Kaczenski, who both shot 48.

Hampshire 159, Chicopee Comp 176 — Riley Florek earned medalist honors on Wednesday afternoon at Blanford Country Club, as his 2-over round of 37 was the day’s best by two shots.

The Raiders’ scoring was rounded out by Brayden Fennessy (39), Kameron Locke (41) and Colby Cabrini (42) as the team broke 160 total strokes for the fourth time this season.

South Hadley 160, Westfield 168 — The Tigers received a match-low round of 36 from Caiden Drohan as he earned medalist honors at even par on Wednesday at Ledges Golf Club.

Ryan MacGregor and Ryley McMahon both shot 40 for South Hadley while Cody Bard led Westfield with a 39.

Ludlow 145, Frontier 152 – The Redhawks posted their lowest score of the season but ran into a buzzsaw in the form of undefeated Ludlow on Wednesday.

Addy Wood (37), Jacob Cornelison (37) and Brady Wood (38) all posted strong scores to lead Frontier.

South Hadley 2, Northampton 0 — Make it three in a row for the newest Hampshire County varsity program, as the Tigers blanked the Blue Devils behind two third-quarter tallies on Wednesday afternoon.

Caraghan Wartel scored both goals for South Hadley, one assisted by Ella Haber and the other assisted by Nora Vaughn.

Northampton goalie Charlotte Johnson-Mersack was terrific in goal with 24 huge saves to keep her team in it.
