  • Thieves this morning apparently carried a 500-pound safe from the club house of the Pine Grove Golf Club on Wilson Road, loaded it onto a golf cart and drove the golf cart to the 15th tee, where they loaded the safe into another vehicle. Owners Douglas Jesanis and Gil Verrillo said they did not know how much money was in the safe, although it was “a sizable amount.”
  • The City Council races in next Tuesday’s primaries present a crowded and confusing picture, with 20 candidates, many of them newcomers, seeking the nine council seats. For all practical purposes, the election will be over next Tuesday, since 18 of the council candidates are Democrats.

  • A massive earth-moving project is under way at Northampton Airport. As of midnight Sunday, the airport officially closed to all nighttime traffic and all aircraft passing through, and it will remain closed for more than three weeks while its runway and taxi lanes are rebuilt.
  • Merchants on the western stretch of Main Street plan to hire musicians two Saturdays per month during October, November and December and asked the Board of Public Works to widen the scope of performers allowed to perform. Harriet Rogers, owner of Skera Gallery, revived an old debate last week when she asked the board to consider allowing seven musicians at a time to play so she could hire an a cappella group.

  • After applying for a $1.8 million state grant, Northampton officials want to hear from residents about a project aiming to make Pleasant Street friendlier for bicyclists and pedestrians. Suggestions for improvements include improved crosswalks and sidewalks, the addition of trees and better-defined side streets with markings in an effort to make the streetscape more visually appealing
  • The Northampton City Council Thursday unanimously approved the appointment of Kristine Bissell to the newly created treasurer-collector position. Bissell, of Goshen, has been the city’s treasurer for just over a year. She has also been heading both the treasurer’s and collector’s offices since former tax collector Melissa Lampron retired in June.
