The Franklin Tech boys golf team had the best showing of area schools at the PVIAC Boys Two-Ball Invitational on Monday, snagging third place.

The Eagles shot a combined 69 at Franconia Golf Course in Longmeadow, which was good enough to put them in a tie with Pope Francis.

Ludlow won the competition with a 67, while Westfield Tech followed close behind with a 68.

Scores from area schools are as follows: Amherst (83), Athol (76), Belchertown (71), Easthampton (91), Frontier (70), Hampshire (75), Hopkins (84), Northampton (80), Pioneer (89), Smith Voc (94) and South Hadley (73).

In a two-ball, two players from each team play their own ball throughout the day and the pair takes the best score from each hole to make up the team’s official score.

Boys soccer

Smith Academy 5, Pioneer 1 — Cajun Benson’s first half hat trick lifted the Falcons over the Panthers.

Matt Scagel (goal), Jason Fahmy (goal, assist) and Oscar Higuera and Jacob Gingras (two assists each) also supported the Smith offense, which led 4-1 at the break.

“We got a win and much needed differential tonight,” Falcons head coach Jason Duncan said. “The boys took care of business. Kudos to Pioneer for bringing the effort for 80 minutes.”

Judah Glenn netted Pioneer’s goal.

Smith goalie Callan Payne had four saves.

South Hadley 1, Central 1 — The Tigers tied for the second straight game as Matt Gillis was South Hadley’s single goalscorer.

Tigers goalie Noah Carillon contributed eight saves.

Belchertown 1, East Longmeadow 0 — Nathan Marino’s goal sent the Orioles past the Spartans. Tim Haley dished out the assist.

Luke Dudek had 10 saves to earn the clean card.

Girls soccer

Mahar 2, Smith Academy 1 — Two first-half goals were enough as the Senators edged the Falcons.

Lexi Murcell and Maggie Ringer scored for Mahar, with Lexi Ares assisting on both tallies.

Smith’s single goal came during the second half from Anna Scagel.

Saves favored the Falcons 13-6 as Vivian Higuera finished with more than Mackenzie Matthews.

“It was a great soccer game,” Mahar head coach Chad Softic said. “I was very pleased with my girls for the sense of urgency we played with throughout the game, which has been an issue.  It was contagious today and I thought Addie Almeida, Lexi Ares and Cordelia Rhodes were immense in the middle of the field for us and Stella Moore was also outstanding.  Both goalies were in fine form. It is nice to get a W next to our name.”

Hampshire 2, Amherst 0 — The Raiders stayed red hot with another win. Hampshire hasn’t lost since its second game of the season.

Libby Puttick and Maggie Lashway potted goals for the Raiders while six saves was all Karaghan Rogalski needed to make in goal to earn the shutout for Hampshire.

Hurricanes keeper Annika Redington totaled six saves.

Hopkins 1, Chicopee 1 — Bridget Benoit netted a free-kick goal in the 70th minute as the Golden Hawks came back to earn a draw.

Abril Cabrera gathered three saves for Hopkins.

Frontier 5, Monson 4 — Three points from Maddie Fagan put the Redhawks past the Panthers in Monday’s barn-burner.

Fagan (two), Addy Morey, Mara Allium (penalty kick) and Danica Kapcza found the back of the net for Frontier.

Smith Voc 1, Hoosac Valley 0 — An unassisted goal from Katelynn Hennessy was all the Vikings needed to pick up their second consecutive shutout.

Julianis Suarez made one save in net for Smith Voc.

Field hockey

Smith Academy 4, Holyoke 0 — The Falcons cruised to their fourth shutout of the season, thanks to strong games from Shae Moulton (two goals) and Bella Gavron (goal, assist).

Chloe Avery blanked the Purple Knights as Smith’s goalie.

“[Monday’s] game was a great way to round out September hockey,” Falcons head coach Karlie Guimond said. “It was great to have each player make an impact on the game. I have the utmost confidence in this team as we head into October and beyond.”

Belchertown 3, Southwick 0 — The Orioles flew to their third win in a row with the shutout.

Addi DiBona, Rachel Baltazar and Kian Roy scored for Belchertown. Kian Roy, Gianna Zenon, Kina Roy and Julia Rainaud also chipped in assists.

Lila Roy stopped all nine Rams shots.

Amherst 1, Northampton 0 — The Hurricanes received their only goal on a lifted shot from Aria Haupt in the third quarter.

Charlotte Johnson Mersack concluded with 10 saves while Eden Polak did not see any shots.

Frontier 1, Agawam 0 — Brooke Charest turned aside all 10 shots to lead the Redhawks to the shutout win.

Macy DeMaio (goal) and Haly Doucette-Kaplan connected on Frontier’s deciding goal.

Mohawk Trail 1, Hampshire 0 — Jayda Waters scored the game’s only goal for the Warriors.

Brynlee Purington secured the shutout with two saves. Raiders goalie Grace Layman recorded six saves in the defeat.

Girls volleyball

Easthampton 3, Ludlow 1 — The Eagles snapped their seven match losing streak with the home victory.

Brooke Skowron (six assists, seven digs and eight aces) and Summer Routhier (assist, five digs, six aces) powered Easthampton to its second win of the year.

Set scores were 25-15, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-16.

East Longmeadow 3, Belchertown 0 — The Orioles were unable to win a set for the fifth time this season.

Olivia Skora (two kills, 19 assists, seven digs) and Kaiya Cavanaugh (ace, 21 digs) performed well for Belchertown.

Set scores finished at 20-25, 17-25 and 19-25.

Golf

Chicopee Comp 160, Amherst 183 — Graham van Giesson shot 41 to lead the Hurricanes in the defeat at Amherst Golf Club.

Phin Pyecroft (43), Callum Bohne (47) and Alex Zakashansky (52) made up Amherst’s other three scorers in the match.

Girls soccer

Hampshire 3, Millbury 0 — The Raiders registered their third shutout in a row in the road victory on Saturday.

Libby Puttick posted two points (goal, assist) to pace Hampshire’s offense. Addie Miklasiewicz and Lila Watkins also scored while Morgan Lawler added an assist for the Raiders.

Goalie Karaghan Rogalski had three saves for Hampshire.

Belchertown 5, West Springfield 1 — The Orioles’ offense broke open with their most goals in a game in the win on Saturday.

Alexa Karabetsos (two goals) and Eleanor Mazzafero (goal, assist) led Belchertown in points while Mack Bowers and Adelina Gilberto also scored for the hosts.

Linnea Anderson and Alexis Canoa each tallied three saves in goal for the Orioles.

Granby 5, Chicopee Comp 1 — Four goals from Kalli White gave the Rams their second straight victory.

Kara White netted Granby’s other goal while McKenna Cudworth, Bri-Anne Kraus (two) and Marcela Tapia posted assists.

Granby goalie Meredith Bartosz grabbed five saves.

Boys soccer

Frontier 2, Belchertown 2 — A pair of assists from Tim Haley late in the second half helped the Orioles erase a 2-0 Redhawks advantage and draw Saturday’s matinee.

Grayden Gifford assisted on Frontier’s first goal scored by Xavier Fripp during the first half, then doubled its lead with a strike in the 45th minute.

Eleven minutes later, Belchertown’s Tyler Burrows buried its first goal of the contest, before Chase Connor tied it with a strike in the 60th minute.

Luke Dudek (Orioles) concluded with seven saves while Jack Cusson (Redhawks) finished with five stops.

Field hockey

Belchertown 2, Amherst 1 — Saturday night’s Valley Division showdown fell in favor of the Orioles.

Kian Roy and Edith Audette counted as Belchertown’s goalscorers while Sophia Soares secured the Hurricanes’ single strike following a feed from Aria Haupt. Kina Roy assisted on both of the Orioles’ goals.

Lila Roy finished with nine saves for Belchertown while Eden Polak had 10 for Amherst.

Cross country

The Northampton Blue Devils competed at the Baystate Invitational in Wrentham this past weekend and both the boys and girls squads snagged fifth-place finishes.

Mairead O’Neil had the best finish of any Blue Devil, taking fourth place in the girls race in 18 minutes, 24 seconds, while Gus Frey was the top runner on the boys side for Northampton, earning 16th place in 16:39.

Charlotte Shimpoch (22nd, 20:35) Zea Meerbergen (28th, 20:50) Mia Levy (38th, 21:18) and Maddalena Figueroa-Starr (47th, 21:34) helped the Blue Devils girls grab 134 points for fifth, along with O’Neil.

The Northampton boys totaled 174 points, thanks to finishes from Henry Daggett (24th, 16:57), Dashiell Kruckemeyer (38th, 17:37) Asher Dixon (53rd, 18:07) and Isaiah Carnevale (18:28), following Frey.
