- The third annual Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association, will be held on Oct. 18. Plans are under way for Main Street to be turned into a mall from the hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
- “Sidney Salmon” is dead, a victim of his own enthusiasm. The 33-inch salmon, the first to be taken alive at the Holyoke Dam in more than 100 years and the one whose appearance revived hopes the salmon would be returning to the Connecticut River, died this week at the Berkshire National Fish Hatchery.

- The Boston and Maine railroad bridge on Main Street took its fifth major hit this year, after a fully loaded tractor-trailer slammed into it shortly after 5 a.m., peeling back its entire roof. The driver was not injured in the accident, police said.
- The city cot shelter’s scheduled opening next month in the former Elks Lodge on Center Street will be postponed indefinitely after recent renovations on the building encountered several snags. The delay was caused mainly by two unexpected discoveries, said building owner and city businessman William Muller: asbestos in the ceilings of two rooms and an oil tank buried in the rear of the building.

- A new park, added public transportation and using wastewater for heating and cooling are among the ideas presented Wednesday night by a team of experts from around the country who spent three days in Northampton to help guide it in preparing for the effects of climate change.
- Easthampton’s Emily Williston Memorial Library Director Tamsen Conner will leave her position next month to move to California. Conner is moving to Los Angeles with her partner, who has found new work as a voice actor. Her last day will be on Oct. 16 after less than a year on the job.
