I recently moved back to Northampton after a 25-year hiatus. One reason I decided to move back to my hometown was that I saw that the inherent humanity I took for granted growing up here is not so common in other parts of the U.S. I believe that quality education and supporting all students is critical to move ahead in a more positive direction. And if we canโ€™t do that on a national level, we can do it locally.

Thatโ€™s why I am voting for Robbie Saner Sullivan for School Committee at large.โ€จโ€จAs a relative newcomer to the city, I didn’t expect to jump into local politics quite so soon, but despite not having any school-age children, I quickly learned about the discourse with the current School Committee. The fact that all but two School Committee members are not running for re-election this year is often attributed to that negative discourse, but letโ€™s flip that script. This turnover provides an opportunity to elect new members with fresh commitment and fresh perspective.

In my short time here I had the opportunity to get to know Robbie. When I talk with her, she is open, really listens, and always responds with kindness and conviction. I have been especially impressed with her desire to be innovative and look at issues holistically, and then assess how to move forward. In approaching issues before the School Committee, Iโ€™m certain that she will weigh whether it is best to continue with established practices or if there are other progressive, thoughtful, and creative ways to proceed. I strongly believe she has the best interests of the schools at heart.โ€จโ€จAs a member of her campaign committee Iโ€™ve observed that Robbie is firm in her values and not afraid to articulate concerns, even when they are uncomfortable. She is also capable of receiving feedback and making meaningful shifts and can work collaboratively with people who have different opinions because she listens actively and checks for understanding. Sheโ€™s curious, asks great questions, and does her research. Please join me in voting for her Nov. 4.
