I write in support of Benjamin Spencer’s candidacy for councilor-at-large for Northampton. Over the years, I have observed Benjamin’s dedication to our city and his thoughtful, compassionate, and reasoned approach to solving Northampton’s problems. He doesn’t just take positions, he listens to people’s concerns and does the work necessary to fully understand what is at stake. In the face of disinformation from the opponents of Picture Main Street, Benjamin hasn’t just voiced an opinion. He has done his homework, studying the plans in depth, and taking city residents on walking tours to show how the plan would actually work. He has shown an extraordinary ability to listen, learn, and adapt his views based on the facts on the ground, not on rumors, misinformation or fears expressed by opponents. He approaches other issues in the same methodical way that is sensitive to the needs of all our residents. His approach is always respectful, thoughtful, and civil.
In a time when fear and misinformation drive so much of our public debate at the national and local level, Benjamin offers a refreshing dedication to the facts and the real issues the city faces. He is not afraid to show up and discuss these concerns with those who disagree. I admire his courage, persistence, patience, and willingness to serve our community. He will be a tremendous asset to the City Council.
