  • A thief or thieves broke into Agway Inc. farm supplies store on King Street late Saturday or early yesterday and made off with an unknown number of snow tires and several radios and televisions. The manager of the store, Jared Beaulieu, said late this morning that employees were still taking inventory.
  • The Smith College sophomore who was stabbed while jogging on Elm Street the night of Oct. 14 is “doing fine” in a Boston hospital, according to the doctor who treated her at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Meanwhile, Northampton police are continuing their investigation into the incident. They said the four- to six-inch knife used in the stabbing has not been found.

  • The University of Massachusetts has hired a Boston architectural firm, at a cost of $59,000, to determine the feasibility of doubling the size of McGuirk Alumni Stadium to achieve the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 30,000-seat stadium threshold to compete in Division 1-A football.
  • A four-hour, contentious hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals Thursday ended without resolution when the board decided to continue its deliberations on a disputed stop-work order for a Turkey Hill Road quarry operation until Monday. A dozen neighbors complained bitterly while company representatives said the city’s action was unfounded.

  • A University of Massachusetts professor who has worked on improving access to higher education across the world has been tapped to lead a global research effort along the same lines. As chair of the Global Higher Education & Research Challenge, Joseph Berger will oversee efforts to study barriers to higher education worldwide, such as limited access and inequity, and work to propose reform policies for research and education.
  • Christina Cavallari served many Smith College students as owner of the long-running Serio’s Market before her death in 2014. And starting next year, local Smith College students will benefit from a scholarship set up in her memory. Michael Costa, a cousin of Cavallari’s, set up and funded the endowment for the scholarship.
