Many thanks to Madison Schofield for “Bill aims to bolster library plans” (Gazette, Nov. 29), to all the librarians featured in the article, and especially to the State House, for supporting a bill that will protect librarians and free speech, while maintaining a well-reasoned process — led by librarians — to review books when asked.
Librarians are rarely recognized for their hard work in offering the most helpful, appropriate information to the public. Those who serve kids are versed in their specific information needs in a way that even experienced parents usually aren’t.
Librarians face regular challenges to their budgets, expertise, and patience, while they interact with the broadest cross-section of the public. They generally respond with eagerness, helpfulness, and intelligence. Let’s trust these professionals (educated for a minimum of two expensive years) and protect them from those who don’t.
