Recently an article was published about the life (and tragic death) of my Auntie Tracy [“Honoring a daughter lost on Christmas Eve,” Gazette, Dec. 11]. I am her niece and granddaughter of Sandra (Sandy) Eddy. I grew up learning about her and always looking at old year books from Easthampton High School with her pictures in it. I was always told by my Grandma and (late) mother, Carrie, that I reminded them of her. I seemed to take that to heart and was fascinated about learning about her.

However, it will always be a wound that is opened by asking questions about her, I actually learned some new things because of the article. That’s because grief, while it may change and transform over the years, is always there. My grandmother lost both her daughters in tragic ways, but is one of the strongest most inspiring people in my life. She is a true inspiration in how she leads her life and treats her family despite the constant “hole” she must feel everyday due to her losses. She is incredibly humble, and will probably be a little mad that I wrote in about her because she hates attention (hi, Grammy!), yet she deserves all the recognition there is.

My Aunt Tracy was killed by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve. My mom also passed unexpectedly. I think if my Grandma were to ask for anything it would be to live everyday with love in your heart, noticing those small moments that may be simple but bring you joy, and to stay close to your loved ones. She may be too humble to want recognition but she deserves it especially the way she interacts with her community, donating much of her time to volunteering.

So I, Amanda, just want to say how much I adore you, Grammy. How much I still miss mom, and really wish I knew Auntie Tracy because the stories of her are amazing!

Happy holidays everyone, and PLEASE do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking, or stop a friend or family member before they do. Ubers and ride-shares are available. Thank you to all the designated drivers out there! Learn from my family’s tragedy. Love each other everyday!
