  • The City Art Guild is offering for the first time “self-awareness workshops” for couples. The workshops offer an opportunity for persons with or without previous art experience to discover how art can express emotions, a spokesman said.
  • U.S. Navy Fireman Apprentice Robert M. Wager, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Wager of Valley St., recently completed basic training at Great Lakes, Ill. Following a holiday leave, Wager returned to the naval base to attend boiler technician school. He is a 1975 graduate of Northampton High School.

  • Disappointed with all four candidates to replace retiring Superintendent Bruce Willard, the Northampton School Committee is considering reopening the search. Meantime, the committee decided to visit the workplaces of two candidates, JoAnn Austin of Southbridge and Michael Cosgriff of Scituate, eliminated candidate Peter Manoogian of Lynnfield and anguished over a fourth candidate, Joseph Rappa.
  • On Jan. 3, students at JFK Middle School were sent home due to a heating failure. The same thing had happened at Northampton High School Dec. 4, when Principal Diane Stone deemed the building’s 50-degree temperature “too cold to learn.”

  • A 300-year-old Massachusetts chest of drawers embellished with a rare polychrome design is headed to auction where it could fetch as much as $500,000. The oak chest is one of only four known examples of a “Hadley” polychrome โ€” or multicolored โ€” piece believed to be decorated by the same artist.
  • Easthampton will launch a redesigned website in the coming months that officials believe will be easier for residents and visitors to use. Mayor Karen L. Cadieux said that officials will also try to increase the number of public documents available online as part of a related effort.
