Others have written moving letters about the horrific events in Minneapolis and elsewhere, where ICE agents are arresting individuals with passports, explaining “because you have an accent.” It’s heartbreaking. I want to add a personal note. I have a family member who I love dearly who is not a U.S. citizen but has worked here legally for years. I recently asked her if she is planning to become an American citizen and she told me that she no longer wants to be a citizen of this country.
Is that what we want? Is this who we are now?
