The fifth-seeded Hopkins Academy boys basketball team bested fourth-seeded Duggan, 50-48, during the quarterfinal round of the Western Mass. Class D boys basketball tournament on Wednesday night.
Trailing by nine points with two minutes left in the game, the Golden Hawks chipped away at the hosts’ lead, before sinking a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to secure the win.
Derek Gromacki was lights out from beyond the arc, swishing six 3-pointers for 18 points as Hopkins’ top scorer. Chace Earle added 17 points to support the Hawks’ offense.
Hopkins advances to the semifinal round where it’ll square off with Hoosac Valley, the No. 1 seed in Class D.
Class B
No. 1 Science & Tech 78, No. 8 Belchertown 41 — The Orioles’ run in the Class B tournament was short-lived after dropping their quarterfinal opener to the Cybercats.
WMass Girls Basketball
Class A
No. 3 Northampton 48, No. 6 West Springfield 30 — Three Blue Devils players eclipsed double figures in their quarterfinal round win.
Emme Calkins (16 points), Anna Oravec (15 points) and Liv Joensen (12 points) filled the net for Northampton, which advances to the semifinal round.
The Blue Devils will play the winner of No. 2 Minnechaug and No. 7 Westfield.
Class B
No. 3 South Hadley 57, No. 6 Wahconah 55 — The Tigers squeaked out the victory on their home court in the quarterfinal-round thriller.
Kate Phillips potted 18 points as South Hadley’s top scorer, while Olivia Athas (12 points) and Cara Dean (10 points) racked up double-digit point totals as well.
The Tigers will play second-seeded Frontier in the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
Class D
No. 1 Granby 55, No. 8 Smith Academy 42 — The top-seeded Rams took care of business in the quarterfinal round against the Falcons.
Granby will host No. 5 Pioneer Valley in the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
No. 3 PVCA 41, No. 6 Hopkins 20 — The Golden Hawks couldn’t pull off the upset on the road, falling to the Eagles in the quarterfinal round.

Granby 49, PVCA 43 โ The Rams got out to an early 20-3 lead in the first quarter, holding on for a win off the back of 23 points from Zavien Fernandez.
Hampshire 63, Mount Greylock 51 โ The Raiders made an impressive comeback after facing a six-point deficit at halftime, led by Isaiah Isa’s 18 points in the win.
Girls basketball
Monument Mountain 54, Amherst 32 โ The Hurricanes suffered a tough loss despite Iman Skouta leading all scorers with 15 points.

Nordic Skiing
The MIAA Nordic Ski Championships were held at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vt., Tuesday afternoon where Amherst Regional closed out its season.
Calvin Miller pushed the boys team to a fourth-place finish as a team, grabbing sixth place overall. Otis Fairey (16th), Ian Burns (19th) and Hunter Pete (36th) also scored for the ‘Canes.
Elsie Woodruff led the Amherst girls squad to a 12th-place team finish, taking 35th place overall as its top finisher.

Wrestling
Belchertown 52, PVCICS 6 — The Orioles won all but one match in the convincing victory against the Dragons.
Alex Maroney (113), Edan Chaverri (120), Brogan Bottari (126), Andre Jarry (144), Liam Verrochi (157) and Ronan Mosher (165) all earned wins by fall for Belchertown. Brody Pope (138) won by major decision, 15-6, against PVCICS’ Wyatt Humphrey.
Simon Speek (132) snagged a pin for the Dragons’ lone victory.
Girls basketball
Holyoke 58, Science & Tech 48 — The Purple Knights posted 22 points in the fourth to steal the win.
Juliana Pirela dropped 27 points for Holyoke in the victory.
Baystate Academy 46, Smith Voc 40 — The Vikings dropped their second in as many days to the Bulls.
Mallory Radwich scored 12 points for Smith Voc.
