Smith College, institutional courage, and you and I

I have had the pleasure of watching the amazing athletes of the Smith College basketball team compete. True student athletes demonstrating the finest aspects in collegiate sports.
I learned that the NBA Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti at one of their games. It prompted me to inquire as to whether Smith College could do the same at one of their home games. I was informed that they could not. I am not writing to disparage the college’s decision. I imagine I may have taken the same conservative approach if I were in charge. It simply reflects yet again how our institutions have been stymied in their ability to speak out. So, each of us is challenged to rise to the occasion, take action and speak out. We have a long road ahead of us in the fight for democracy. Please step forward as you are able.
