- A new funeral home supply business will open in early March at 300 Pleasant Street. The Northampton Burial Supply shop will locate on the first floor of the Pleasant Street building. The Mountain View Glider Sports shop, which was located at the site, has moved upstairs at the same address.
- The Northampton Bicentennial Committee, claiming that it has not received adequate credit for committee-sponsored projects, last night said it would look for a salaried staff person with public relation skills. The staff member would be the third in a little more than a year to serve in the post.

- The developer of a 24-family cohousing development on Florence Road has begun meeting with a group of people interested in establishing a similar community on 27 acres of adjacent land. Developer Douglas Kohl of Amherst, who owns the land, said he met with about a dozen people Feb. 10 to talk about creating another planned neighborhood south of the existing Pathways Cohousing project.
- Hampshire Community United Way has named former Campaign Chair Kimball W. Howes the recipient of the 2001 Norman H. Drouin distinguished service award, which will be presented at the United Way s annual meeting Thursday at The Hotel Northampton.

- Unmi Abkin, who owns Coco & The Cellar Bar with her husband Roger Taylor, is one of 20 semifinalists for the title of best chef in the Northeast in what is commonly referred to as the Oscars of food. The honor is given by the James Beard Foundation each year. Abkin joins another local duo, Cheryl Maffei and Jonathan Stevens of Hungry Ghost Bread, who together are in the running for outstanding baker.
- Having already abandoned its efforts to build a new studio on Main Street, Amherst Media is placing on the block the two lots it purchased in December 2013. “It’s unfortunate we couldn’t make it work,” said James Lescault, the organization’s executive director. “We were very disappointed we were not able to move this forward.”
