Columnist Tolley M. Jones deserves a round of applause at the very least for pointing out that, in fact, “the emperor has no clothes” [“This is exactly who we are,” Gazette, March 13]. The continuing myth of American exceptionalism, based in part on Calvinist beliefs that some are chosen by God to prosper and others are not, has held many well-meaning Americans hostage for many years. Perhaps this latest round of the powerful few seizing and consolidating their power on the backs of the many will tear the veil from the eyes of those who still cling to the notion of the United States as a bastion of pluralism, fairness and freedom.
