HATFIELD — A brief memorial service this Friday will celebrate the life and legacy of Kyle Scott, Hatfield’s building commissioner since 2014, who died on March 26 at the age of 64 after an illness.

On April 3, Hatfield officials announced Scott’s passing, writing in a statement, “we will miss working with Kyle, and send our deepest condolences to his family and friends, including his wife Ely.”

The Select Board on Tuesday will be appointing Walter Marek, the alternate building inspector, as interim building commissioner during a transition period. Marek is building commissioner in Westhampton and works in the construction field, and can be contacted at building@townofhatfield.org.

Scott has also been the building commissioner in Hadley for the past year. Town staff and the Select Board indicated its members would be attending the Hatfield memorial service.

“The town has been in contact with his family to extend our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time,” a statement from Hadley Town Hall reads.

The Hadley Select Board appointed David Waskiewicz as part-time building commissioner at a meeting at noon on April 3. Waskiewicz currently serves as the assistant building commissioner in Amherst and has long been an alternate building inspector in Hadley. He will work up to 10 hours per week as the town begins the process of permanently filling Scott’s position.

Scott previously served as building commissioner in Southwick and worked in the Northampton building commissioner’s office earlier in his career. He also spent several years in the private construction industry.

The memorial service in Hatfield will be at 11 a.m., and all community members are welcome to join, with coffee and light refreshments to be served.
