HOLYOKE — The victim of a fatal shooting in Holyoke last Wednesday has been identified as Easthampton man Caleb Rodriguez, 43.
The second fatal shooting in the Paper City in less than a month occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on May 6, when Holyoke Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 99 Suffolk St., Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said in a statement.
Responding officers located an adult male, now identified as Rodriguez, suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle. Officers gained entry into the vehicle and immediately began life-saving measures before transporting Rodriguez to Baystate Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead, according to Gulluni.
“Preliminary investigation indicates the victim was seated inside his vehicle when an altercation occurred involving multiple individuals,” Gulluni stated. “Evidence gathered during the investigation, including witness statements and surveillance footage, indicates the incident may have stemmed from an attempted robbery.”
The investigation is being conducted by the Hampden District Attorney’s State Police Detective Unit, Murder Unit and the Holyoke Police Department. Gulluni expresses his sympathies to the victim’s family.
A separate shooting occurred on April 18 on 139 Sergeant St., where 31-year-old Robert Abreu, of Holyoke, was shot while seated in his vehicle.
Holyoke Police arrested Delani Rodriguez, 21, of Holyoke, on April 22 in connection with Abreu’s death and charged her with murder. Her alleged accomplice, 22-year-old Daniel Medina, also of Holyoke, remains at large and is wanted for murder, according to the DA’s office.
Investigators have identified Medina as the individual who fired the gun during the altercation.
