HATFIELD — Twice in the waning days of May, trees have been planted in a small patch of dirt at the corner of Depot and Straits roads, where excavation of pavement for a water line extension has been underway.

Despite the first tree going in around May 19 and a larger tree sprouting up on May 27, both were removed before being allowed to take root.

Town Administrator Andrew Levine said the construction to expand the water lines will go down Straits and connect to where work was initially completed two years ago.

Stephanie Slysz, who chairs the Planning Board, has seen the trees, quipping that the person doing this might be trying to create a new traffic pattern, and describing it as “an innovative way to establish a roundabout.”

Whatever the motivation for the person placing the trees, the person shouldn’t get hopes up that this type of vegetation will be allowed to grow in that intersection.

“We’ll be repaving it after we finish the line,” Levine said.
