I was deeply disappointed to read that the Frontier Regional School Committee voted against moving the plaque honoring fallen soldier Gregory Belanger to the new scoreboard.

I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Gregory’s mother, Kathleen Belanger, and it was impossible not to be moved by her love for her son and her desire to ensure that his sacrifice is never forgotten. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child, let alone one who gave his life for in service of our country.

Gregory was more than a former Frontier student. He was a son, classmate, and member of our community who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq. The plaque bearing his name is not simply a memorial but a reminder to future generations that freedom sometimes comes with a cost.

Schools are places where we teach history, citizenship, and service. A small plaque on a scoreboard does not diminish the educational mission of our school, it enhances it.

Policies matter, but compassion and common sense matter too. Preserving an existing tribute to a fallen graduate does not create a slippery slope any more than naming the gym after a former coach in memoriam. It honors a member of our school community who gave everything in service to our nation.

I hope the School Committee will reconsider its decision and work with the Belanger family to find a way to continue honoring Gregory’s memory.
