NORTHAMPTON — A 46-year-old man from Northampton has been declared brain dead after he was struck by a motor vehicle while riding a bicycle on Damon Road Saturday evening, according to his brother.
Devin Reade, originally from Shelburne, was transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment after the crash, which occurred not far from the turnoff to the Northampton Industrial Park near the Interstate 91 overpass.
His brother, Scott Reade, said in an interview Tuesday morning that his brother “flipped over” the handle bars on his bike and “landed on his head.” He said he and his family were considering donating Devin Reade’s organs.
“My brother was always a free-spirited individual. No matter where he was or what he was doing, he always felt like he was on top of the world,” Scott Reade said. “Drivers, open your eyes.”
According to Melissa Sippel, a spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, first responders responded to the area of 100 Damon Road in Northampton at about 4 p.m.
The DA’s office said a preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle and the bicycle were both traveling eastbound on Damon Road when the collision occurred. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with police, and no charges had been filed as of 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the Northampton Police Department.
