AMHERST — Police are investigating possible white supremacist graffiti placed on two utility boxes in downtown Amherst in August.
The symbols, discovered Aug. 25, appeared to be a version of a triskele, with a triple spiral made up of an interlocking number 7. Extremist hate groups have been known to use these symbols, the town said in a statement.
The graffiti was located on electrical boxes at Kendrick Park at the north end of downtown and at the corner of Northampton Road and South Pleasant Street, at the southern end of downtown.
On Tuesday, the town issued a statement, posted on its website, that the symbol doesn’t reflect Amherst’s values.
“Our community remains committed to ensuring all residents and visitors feel welcomed, accepted and celebrated in Amherst,” the town wrote.
Department of Public Works workers and police officers removed the graffiti as soon as it was observed.
