- Health services at the University of Massachusetts will be investigated by the Hampshire-Franklin District Atty. John Callahan. A group of former students and the president of the Graduate Student Senate charged the center with alleged financial wrongdoing and criminal misconduct. The charges include alleged financial conflict of interest, favoritism in hiring and promotions, lack of competitive bidding, and authorization of “abusive overtime pay.”
- The Great Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America has announced the appointment of John E. Fitzpatrick Jr. as associate district executive. Fitzpatrick, a Greenfield resident, will serve the Franklin and Hampshire County areas, working with the Cub Scout and explorer programs.

- Wearing respirators and harnesses with 60-foot-long tethers, crews working on the Coolidge Bridge have been dismantling it piece by piece as they work to add a fourth lane. Officials say that the long-awaited $19.8 million project is on schedule for completion by August 2003 and, contrary to widespread expectations, has not significantly exacerbated traffic congestion or impeded the crossing of emergency vehicles.
- The License Commission voted down a request to extend bar hours to 2 a.m. across the city but agreed to consider later hours on a case-by-case basis. License Commission member William Rosen said today that public safety and peaceful neighborhoods won out over economic viability.

- New Century Theatre, a summer fixture at Smith College since 1991, is looking for a new home after the school parted ways with the company. Although the theater has just begun looking at other possible places for future performances, artistic director and co-founder Sam Rush said he is confident the company will find a new venue by next summer.
- After more than a year’s absence, the letter “A” has returned to the Calvin Theatre marquee. The letter has been missing since July 2015. In April, theater owner Eric Suher declined to provide a timetable for a replacement of the missing letter. The incomplete name on the marquee has been brought up in several public meetings.
