Monson/Hadley, MA – Thomas S. Fil, 68, of Monson and Hadley, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on September 29, 2026.
Born in Northampton, Tom was the eldest son among the five children of Stanley Fil and the late Anna (Osciak) Fil. Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, he often reflected on his youth as a “glorious time for a boy to be growing up in Hadley.” He embraced an ethos of “simple abundance,” finding purpose and pride in plentiful farmwork-whether picking asparagus and squash, mowing neighbors’ lawns, cutting firewood, painting, shoveling snow, or biking through town. A graduate of Hopkins Academy in Hadley, he worked at Mish’s Potato Warehouse and picked cucumbers to transport to the pickle plant in Hatfield.
Tom launched his professional career as a bank teller in the money room at the former Riverside Park. Driven to serve others through precision and integrity, he became a dedicated Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a profession he faithfully practiced for more than 45 years. He built a strong academic foundation, earning an associate degree from Holyoke Community College (HCC), a bachelor’s degree from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Western New England University (WNEU). Most recently, he served clients at Pignatare & Sagan LLC in West Springfield and Westfield. Prior to this, he was a manager at Meyers Brothers Kalicka, P.C. Tom embraced hard work and found fulfillment in staying busy even during demanding annual tax seasons.
That same commitment to patient investment and productive labor defined his life. Among his proudest achievements was bidding and acquiring a historic former Catholic home, safely relocating it to Newton Lane in Hadley at the young age of 30. He also found genuine satisfaction in the garden, practicing the deliberate, long-term cultivation required for asparagus crowns to yield nourishment year after year, and carefully tending hardneck garlic and onions through harsh winters to produce a rich harvest.
Tom’s greatest and most enduring partnership began when he met Marilyn. Early in their courtship, he impressed her with his stand-up comedy at comedy spaces and the Majestic Theater. He once presented Marilyn with a car trunk full of pumpkins-an unexpected, joyful surplus of color and thoughtfulness that laid the foundation for a lifelong bond. Throughout their years together, Marilyn remained loyally and devotedly by his side.
Tom will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Marilyn, and their daughter, Marion, both of whom were profoundly shaped by his integrity, purposeful work, and steadfast loyalty to his friends.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Tom leaves behind his 105-year-old father, Stanley Fil of Hadley, and his siblings: Elizabeth Vachula and her husband Tom of Hadley; Mary Kirk and her husband Peter of Salisbury, MA; Kathy Fil of Hadley; and Stephen Fil of FL. He is also survived by his nieces Laura, Alexandria, and Emily, and his nephews Jason, Paul, and Evan. He was predeceased by his mother, Anna (Osciak) Fil.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 4th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Czelusniak Funeral Home, 173 North Street, Northampton. On Monday, October 5th, the funeral procession will form at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home, proceeding to a 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at Most Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, 120 Russell Street (Route 9), Hadley.
