WHATELY — Town officials are seeking contractors to complete the Town Hall renovation project, one that has a base bid estimate of $1.1 million.

“The scope of work for this project includes the renovation of the existing two story historic Town Hall and an addition housing an accessible lift and stairs,” according to an “invitation to bid” statement posted in the newspaper.

To pay for renovations, the town has raised nearly $1 million. Of that, about half is from the state, the rest through local sources. Town officials intend to convert the former municipal office building into a community center and historical society museum.

“Interior renovations include new restrooms at the first floor and renovation of existing rooms. Site work includes renovated parking at the north side of the building as well as new sidewalks and accessible entrances.”

Updated plumbing, energy-efficient insulation and windows, and new air conditioning units are also part of the project.

Anyone submitting a bid must be certified by the state Department of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance as a general contractor or historic building general contractor, the statement says.

Subcontractors, which can sub-bid for painting, elevators, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical, also need to be state certified.

Bid forms and contracts can be found at New England Blue Print Company, 302 Locust St. in Springfield. Or online at wwww.newenglandblue.com. For questions contact George Dole, Jones Whitsett Architects at 413-773-5551. Or, email gd@joneswhitsett.com.

Completed and sealed bids should be headlined “Whately Town Hall: Renovations as a Community Center and Historical Society Museum,” care of town administrator, Whately Town Offices, 4 Sandy Lane, Whately, MA 01373.

There will be a pre-bid conference and site inspection Thursday, Aug. 17, starting at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall, 194 Chestnut Plain Road in the center of town.
