GREENFIELD — An early morning fire displaced three residents and caused extensive damage to a two-family home on Pierce Street Wednesday.
The department received a call from the first-floor tenant at 10 Pierce St. around 1:14 a.m., and upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames from the building’s second floor and attic area, triggering a second alarm.
“They were able to initiate an aggressive interior attack. We went to a second alarm, which pulled in mutual aid into the city, both to the scene and cover the firehouse,” Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan said. “The fire was quickly knocked down and then they were on scene for quite a bit of time checking for hot spots and making sure the fire was completely out.”
He said all of the occupants escaped but two firefighters received minor injuries — one to the hand and the other to the knee — and were treated at the scene.
Strahan said the fire caused extensive damage to the second floor and the attic, and there was water damage throughout the house. He said there are two apartments in the building and was not aware of any pets in either.
“We had made arrangements with the Red Cross and they will be working with the folks to assist them,” he said.
Jeffrey E. LaPointe of South Deerfield owns the property, according to information from the Greenfield Assessor’s Office. He could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.
Firefighters finished at the scene around 5 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Greenfield police and fire departments and state police assigned to the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
Firefighters from Turners Falls, Brattleboro, Bernardston, Deerfield, South Deerfield, Erving and others helped fight the fire, while Northampton, Montague Center and Northfield provided station coverage.
