I have been following the story about the scout camp next to the shooting range in Granby. It seems parents are upset with the Granby Board of Health and the chair in particular. I worked with Richard Bombardier when I served as Granby’s health agent and director of tobacco control 20 years ago, and I am moved to write to describe the kind of leader he is.

During my tenure, we tackled issues such as the aerial spraying to kill mosquitoes during the first wave of public fear of West Nile Virus. Dick was always reflective and decisive in his concern for the health and well-being of Granby’s residents. He made decisions that demonstrated leadership and skill, rather than seeking popularity. We collaborated with other board members to fairly research issues before deciding on courses of action.

For example, we opted not to spray for mosquitoes because of the rising asthma rates in communities that performed aerial spraying. Instead, we launched an information campaign to educate residents about methods of protection. Mr. Bombardier was always willing to take the heat and to describe with eloquence how he and other board members arrived at their decisions. He is a true public servant who puts the safety of all above personal gratification.

While it is understandable that people are disappointed about the camp, the safety of children close to an active shooting range must hold significant weight. Knowing Mr. Bombardier, this decision was reached thoughtfully.
