AMHERST – Shumway Street will be closed to through traffic daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for about two months as water and sewer improvements begin Tuesday. Caracas Construction of Ludlow will start with a sewer main replacement at the south end of the street, at the intersection with College Street, and continue north toward Main Street. Water main replacement work will occur after the sewer work is complete.

People who live on the road will be allowed to access their homes but may face delays. On-street parking will not be allowed for the duration of the work.

The project is being funded with a portion of $2.1 million from the water enterprise fund, which is also being used for water improvements on Harris and Fisher streets, Dickinson Street and Pomeroy Lane.

Anyone with questions should contact the Department of Public Works at 259-3050 or by email at publicworks@amherstma.gov.
