BELCHERTOWN — The School Committee is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy by the end of July following member Richard Fritsch’s resignation last week.

Fritsch, who served on the committee for four years, resigned June 21 during a School Committee meeting, Committee Chair Dawn French said by email Thursday.

According to French, Fritsch cited personal reasons for his departure. The resignation is effective Aug. 1.

Fritsch was first elected to the School Committee in May 2012. He served a three-year term and was reelected in 2015 to another three-year term.

The School Committee will accept letters of interest until July 22 at noon, French said. The following week, the Select Board and remaining four School Committee members will meet to interview candidates. The two boards will vote by roll call to appoint a new member, French said.

Interested Belchertown registered voters can send a letter of interest and resume to the Belchertown Public Schools, Office of the Superintendent School Committee, Chair, 14 Maple Street, PO Box 841, Belchertown, MA 01007.

The appointed member will serve until the May 2017 town election. At that time, the new member will need to be put on the ballot for a town vote to keep the seat. Because Fritsch’s seat was set to expire in May 2018, a new School Committee candidate will be elected for a one-year term.
