■The problem of youth congregating on Main Street was discussed yesterday by directors of the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce. Several alternative solutions to the situation were discussed by the directors, including a plan for gatherings in Pulaski Park with a band providing music.
■At the Hampshire County Multiple Listing Service Board meeting last night at the Lord Jeffery Inn in Amherst, Dennison H. Jones received the “M.L.S. Champion of the year” designation. Gordon E. Murphy of Florence was “runner-up.”
■Pulaski Park would be opened as a temporary home for skateboarders this summer, if a proposed ordinance change receives approval from city officials. The Skateboard Committee supports opening Pulaski Park to skateboarders for the short term, while its members continue to search for a permanent location for skateboarding.
■Jared Kajka, 17, is being honored as this year’s student of the year at the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School. Kajka is one of dozens of vocational students from around the state being honored for excellence today by the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators and the Massachusetts Vocational Association.
■The Regional School Committee in Amherst decided Tuesday against starting an immediate search for a replacement for former Superintendent Alberto Rodriguez. Instead, Maria Geryk, who had been assistant superintendent under Rodriguez, will serve as interim head of the school system through June 2011.
■The longest-serving member and current chair of the Northampton Board of Health is stepping down as his campaign for a U.S. congressional seat heats up. Dr. Jay Fleitman said Tuesday that serving a fourth term while in the middle of a time-consuming political campaign is unfair to city residents.
