NORTHAMPTON — The state Department of Public Health reported 1,588 new cases of coronavirus Wednesday, for a total of 16,790, and 77 more deaths.
Six new cases were reported in Hampshire County, bringing the total there to 164.
It was the largest one-day jump in the number of coronavirus cases in the state since the outbreak began.
Cooley Dickinson Hospital currently reported 13 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, including eight who are in the intensive care unit.
The hospital is investigating potential COVID-19 cases among 81 people, including six inpatients, and has had 111 people test positive to date.
Baystate Health is caring for 170 inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infections across all of its facilities, with 34 of these individuals in critical care units. An additional 10 inpatients are being investigated for COVID-19 infection.
Baystate has tested 2,400 people overall, with 1,817 individuals testing negative, 533 testing positive and 50 pending results.
In “hopeful news,” a Baystate spokesman said, “nearly two-thirds of the total confirmed patients with COVID-19 infection either never needed to be admitted or were discharged and are recovering.”
On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Department of Health reported 158 confirmed cases in Hampshire County and 15,202 across the state. The state also reported 96 deaths occurred over the weekend and within 24 hours of Tuesday’s report.
No one from Hampshire County was listed among the deaths Tuesday or Wednesday.
