EASTHAMPTON — A person was transported to the hospital after shooting themselves in a car on Ferry Street Friday afternoon, according to Easthampton police.
City police and emergency workers responded to the area of Ferry Street by the Manhan Rail Trail at 1:16 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired and an injured person inside a car, according to a post on the police department’s Facebook page.
The first officers to arrive on the scene found a car stopped in the travel lane of Ferry Street heading toward Pleasant Street. The person inside was suffering from gunshot wounds and officers initiated “life-saving medical aid,” police reported. A preliminary investigation determined that the injured person had suffered self-inflicted gunshot wounds, they said.
The person was transported by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Police Sgt. Dennis Scribner said around 5 p.m. Friday that he had no current update on the person’s condition, but that last he heard, the person was still alive and in surgery. Scribner did not release any additional information about the victim.
There is no danger to the public and the incident remains under investigation, according to police. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Easthampton Police Detective Bureau at (413) 527-1212.
