50 Years Ago

■Workmen are preparing the former McCallum’s Department Store for the Hampshire County Trade Show opening April 24. The three-day show will have 70 exhibits featuring industry, service and retail products from the county.

■The Solid Waste Management Committee last night named Walter S. Munroe of 70 Rick Drive, Florence, its new chairman. Munroe is director of operations at Coca-Cola Bottling Co. here. He succeeds Julie Saner of Adare Place who has been a member of the solid waste committee since its inception four years ago.

25 Years Ago

■In a wild two-hour period early Saturday, firefighters extinguished blazing furniture inside a University of Massachusetts dormitory room, shortly after being pelted with rocks and bottles while trying to put out bonfires on Hobart Lane and outside the same UMass dormitory complex. Two firefighters responding to simultaneous malicious false alarms at three Amherst College dormitories were also briefly threatened by students.

■The ninth annual Children’s Art Exhibit in celebration of “The Week of the Young Child,” is being held on Main Street in Northampton this week. Collages, paintings and drawings from the city’s childcare centers, preschools and elementary schools will grace the windows and offices of 33 businesses.

■Global warming isn’t just affecting the weather, it’s harming Americans’ health, President Barack Obama said Tuesday as he announced steps that government and businesses will take to better understand and deal with the looming crisis. “We’ve got to do better in protecting our vulnerable families,” Obama said.

■The artist famous for her creation of the iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the nation’s capital, Maya Lin, has been selected as the architect for a $100 million redesign of the Neilson Library, built in 1909 at Smith College. Work on the project will begin in 2017.
