■The election of the President of the United States to succeed the venerable incumbent of that elevated and responsible station has at length terminated, under circumstances more honorable to the national character than could have been anticipated. We refer to the deliberation and calmness which characterized the conduct of the members of both Houses, the order and regularity of the proceedings, and the sober resignation of the vanquished friends of several candidates upon the result being ascertained.
■On the night of the 4th inst., the woolen factory of Messrs. Arnold & Nathan Streeter, of Plainfield, was consumed by fire with all its contents. Loss estimated at five thousand dollars. It is supposed the fire was communicated to a stick of timber on which part of the hearth rested.
■The flag at city hall was ordered to be put at half-staff today by Mayor William H. Feiker out of respect to the memory of President Marion LeRoy Burton of the University of Michigan, formerly president of Smith College.
■St. Mary’s Church on Elm Street was seriously damaged by a fire of unknown origin about 10 o clock last night, and before the blaze was extinguished the fire, smoke and water had caused a loss which the fire authorities estimate will reach at least $10,000. Rev. Dr. T. F. Cummings, pastor of the church, who discovered the fire, said today that he was at a loss to know how the fire started.
■The Smith Vocational High School Board of Trustees has delayed giving final approval to the revised educational specifications for a new building at the school until further discussion with the consultant who wrote the specifications. The Trustees have some questions regarding the size of the gymnasium and cafeteria, and how much renovation of the present school is necessary.
■The Northampton City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to provide $4,000 for planning and design of the TOPICS traffic control program. The program will provide new lights and traffic patterns for the Main Street-Elm Street area, new sidewalks, off street parking and road surfaces for the affected areas.
