AMHERST — Early morning paving is taking place this week around town in an effort to get work done before the University of Massachusetts commencement on May 26.

After a gravel section of Northampton Road between South Prospect and Dana streets received an asphalt base coat, causing traffic to be reduced to one lane on Monday and Tuesday, Caracas Construction and Warner Brothers were scheduled to be at the intersection of South Pleasant Street, Northampton Road and College Street on Wednesday from 2 to 7 a.m., with work to be completed by 6 a.m.

Eastbound traffic was to be permitted through the construction site, but westbound traffic would be detoured via Main and Amity streets.

Thursday, also from 2 to 7 a.m., the companies were to be paving the intersection of University Drive and Northampton Road, again with work to be finished by 6 a.m. Eastbound traffic would be permitted through the construction site. Westbound traffic, though, was to be detoured via Amity Street, Rocky Hill Road and North Maple Street in Hadley. Snell Street will be closed to through traffic.
