Velis reappointed to several committees

BOSTON — Sen. John C. Velis, D-Westfield, has been reappointed by Sen. President Karen Spilka as the Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use, & Recovery as well as the Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Veterans & Federal Affairs.

As chair of these two committees in the 2023-2024 legislative session, Velis led efforts to usher An Act relative to treatments and coverage for substance use disorder and recovery coach licensure and An Act Honoring, Empowering and Recognizing Our Service Members and Veterans into law.

This session Velis hopes to work on legislation to tackle the youth mental health crisis as well as continue his efforts to expand support in the commonwealth for military families, a key criteria considered by the Department of Defense for state investment.

In addition to his appointments as chair of these two committees, Velis will continue to serve as vice chair of the Joint Committee on Aging and Independence (formerly the Elder Affairs Committee), and as a member of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, Joint Committee on Public Safety and Security, the Joint Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures, and State Assets, and the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight.

Stavros staffer McCord retires after 32 years

AMHERST — Stavros Center for Independent Living announces the retirement of Kathy McCord, who has dedicated over 32 years of exceptional service to the organization.

McCord’s contributions have been invaluable in advancing Stavros’ mission of supporting individuals with disabilities and promoting independent living.

Her journey at Stavros began in 1993, and over the years, she has held various roles, making an impact in departments such as information and referral, advocacy, and as the recording secretary for the board of directors.

Reflecting on her retirement, McCord shared, “Stavros has changed my life. From a person who knew nothing about this agency with the strange name to someone who has thrived, learned, and found joy in every moment spent here. I will miss my friends and coworkers, but I am grateful for the support and growth I experienced throughout my years at Stavros.”
