It was a winning weekend for the Amherst College soccer programs.
Both the men’s and women’s teams took care of business in the opening rounds of the NCAA Division 3 Tournament, punching tickets to the Sweet 16.
The men’s team took down SUNY-Poly on Saturday, 2-1, in the opening round before notching a 1-0 overtime win over Stevens Institute of Technology in the second round on Sunday.
Against Stevens, the Mammoths received the game-winning goal from Declan Sung to earn a spot in the Sweet 16.
The women’s team blanked Maine Maritime Academy, 5-0, in Saturday’s first round before handling Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-1, on Sunday in the second round. Fiona Bernet netted the game-winning goal for Amherst, which also received tallies from Alyssa Huynh and Abby Schwartz.
Maine 69, UMass 48 – It was a disappointing trip to Maine for the Minutewomen on Sunday.
The host Black Bears jumped on UMass in the first quarter, taking a 23-9 advantage after one period and kept the Minutewomen at arm’s length for a decisive non-conference win in Orono.
UMass (1-2) trailed 42-22 at halftime. The visitors were led offensively by 15 points from Stefanie Kulesza, who scored 11 of her team-leading 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Bre Bellamy hauled in a team-leading six boards and added 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field.
Maine outrebounded UMass by a 41-26 margin, and the Minutewomen shot just 39 percent from the floor.
UMass will look to halt its two-game losing streak on Thursday at the Mullins Center for a 6 p.m. tip against Harvard.
Vermont 6, UMass 2 – Trailing 2-0 in the first period, the visiting Catamounts scored six unanswered goals, pulling away for a 6-2 Hockey East win at the Mullins Center on Saturday night.
Vermont salvaged a weekend split after UMass (6-3-1) won on Friday night.
“I thought we came out, had a good first period and got up 2-0,” UMass coach Greg Carvel said. “I liked the way we were playing and then we immediately take an undisciplined penalty in the offensive zone and give them life. I feel like if we could have held them off the scoreboard in the first period maybe they don't go into the intermission with some life. I give them credit, they played the way that they should, we needed some saves in the second period and once they got a big lead, they did a really good job of defending and staying above the puck. I thought we created chances and we could've shortened the lead, but their goaltender was obviously a lot better than ours tonight. That was a big factor.”
Freshmen Aydar Suniev and Dans Locmelis scored for the Minutemen. Goalies Michael Hrabal (10) and Cole Brady (7) combined for 17 for the Minutemen.
Next up is a rare Thursday night game when the squad travels to play at Providence on NESN at 7 p.m.
