UMass men’s basketball coach Frank Martin signed a two-year extension to keep him in Amherst through the 2028-29 season, UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford announced Thursday.

Martin led the Minutemen to a 15-16 mark in his first season in 2022-23 and a 20-11 mark in 2023-24, UMass’ most wins in a decade. UMass earned the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and lost in the quarterfinals.

Martin and his staff will both receive raises, per release. Martin’s initial contract signed with UMass in 2022 was for five years and $1 million per year, which made him the highest-paid public employee in Massachusetts. In addition to the base salary this year, Martin also earned a $525,000 bonus, a $12,500 bonus for a top-four A-10 finish and a $150,000 retention bonus on July 1.

"I am unbelievably excited personally, for our staff and players that this university believes in us and asked us to be a part of the present and extend us well into the future," Martin said in a statement. "Together with our supporters, we will continue to build this program and get it back to a championship level like it deserves and assist the university as we transition to a new conference. I have tremendous enthusiasm for this opportunity that Ryan Bamford and Javier Reyes have afforded me."

Last year, Martin’s Minutemen led the A-10 in scoring and led the NCAA in points per game off post ups thanks to First-Team All-Atlantic 10 big men Matt Cross and Josh Cohen. Both transferred in the offseason. UMass returns seven players from last year’s team, led by Atlantic 10 Co-Most Improved Player Rahsool Diggins, and added four transfers and four freshmen. This will be the UMass’ final season in the Atlantic 10 before it moves to the Mid-American Conference in 2025-26.

"Our investment in Coach Martin and his staff, along with several other programmatic enhancements over the next two years, shows our commitment to building a men's basketball program that can realize sustained success and advance our recognizable college basketball brand.”

Before UMass, Martin spent five years at Kansas State and 10 years at South Carolina. In 2016-17, he was named the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year and led the Gamecocks to their first-ever Final Four. He holds an all-time record of 323-228 across 17 seasons.
