SOUTH DEERFIELD — It all came down to one match.

During Tuesday’s Class B semifinal of the Western Massachusetts tournament between the No. 2 Frontier girls tennis team and No. 3 St. Mary’s, both squads were deadlocked, 2-2, heading into second doubles, the final match of the afternoon.

Luckily for the Redhawks, Brooke Charest and Hailey Fernandez know a thing or two about pressure situations and pulled through yet again, winning the deciding match, 6-1, 6-3, against the Saints to send Frontier to the Class B final in an entertaining victory on its home court.

“They knew it was 2-2 at that point and it’s not an unusual position for them,” Redhawks head coach Andrew Varnon said. “Brooke and Hailey are both eighth-graders and they’re young and they’re joyous and they really enjoy playing, which is good to see. It’s infectious.”

Charest and Fernandez have been unstoppable between the lines for Frontier this season in second doubles, as evidenced by their undefeated record, which improved to 15-0 with their match-clinching win Tuesday.

“It was a very exciting match,” Varnon said. “The score line was in our favor, but I think there were good points and good play on both sides.”

The Redhawks’ first doubles tandem of Esther Ehle and Aylen Shaw were victorious by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and Kayla Fagan, their second singles, won 6-2, 6-3, which lined up with how Varnon’s young group — the entire team is composed of eighth and ninth-graders — have approached every match this season.

“As I’ve told my girls, we try to win both doubles and scratch a point out of singles every match and we were able to do that today,” Varnon said.

Thanushi Ratnatunge (first singles, 3-6, 3-6) and Ella Sibley (third singles, 2-6, 3-6) counted as Frontier’s two defeats in the semifinal.

St. Mary’s won the first meeting between these two teams, 3-2, on April 29, which served as a preview for another closely contested match on Tuesday.

“St. Mary’s is a really spirited, friendly team and we enjoy playing them,” Varnon said. “We lost to them earlier in the season, 2-3, but there were two three-setters in that match, so it was really close. I knew that this was a team that if we played well, we could beat, so we did.”

No. 1 Belchertown 5, No. 4 Pope Francis 0 — The Orioles advanced to the Class B final with ease, shutting out the Cardinals on Tuesday. Amanda Murray, Mia Corish and Gianna Picardi lost just two games combined in singles for Belchertown, while Edith Audette and Katie Collins (6-0, 6-1), plus Allie Randall and Emma Kornbluth (6-2, 6-1) closed out the victory for the Orioles in doubles.

Belchertown is set to play Frontier in the Class B final on Wednesday.

Class A finals

No. 1 Longmeadow 5, No. 2 Amherst 0 — The Hurricanes earned a spot in the Class A finals after defeating Ludlow in Monday’s semifinals, but their Western Mass. tournament run would end there after running into a powerhouse Lancers group.

Amherst’s Emma Learned-Miller put up a fight at first singles, but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to Sarah Tiru. The ‘Canes second doubles tandem of Janaki Ewoton and Elena Ruiz played in the closest match of the day, dropping a 6-4, 6-4 bout to Tess Maggi and Maia Oh of Longmeadow.

Amherst will turn its attention to the MIAA state tournament.

Non-playoff games

Amherst 16, McCann Tech 1 — Eight different goalscorers powered the Hurricanes to a regular-season win on Tuesday. Evie Donta snatched 13 saves for the ‘Canes, who will host Mount Greylock on Friday in the Western Mass. tournament semifinals.

Northampton 14, Mount Greylock 8 — The win streak is now at 10 for the Blue Devils following Tuesday’s triumph. Northampton scored at least three goals in every quarter (five during the third) and now head into the Western Mass. tournament — starting Thursday versus Chicopee — with loads of momentum.

Late Monday results

Youth baseball

Amherst 15, Granby 7 — Oliver Howard led the way in a big way, blasting a home run, a triple and turning an unassisted double play at third base as the ‘Canes overcame an early 4-0 deficit on Monday.

The game was tight through three, with Granby showing up ready to hit and putting four on the board in the first. Amherst righted the ship and went up 6-5 through three and then opened it up with eight runs in the top of the fourth. The Hurricanes offense benefited from three-hit nights out of Miles Fox, Cyrus Arwade and Jack Bajnoci. Sean Lucien and Keenan Hamilton also contributed hits in the win.
