HS Roundup: Kaleb Jorritsma tosses complete-game shutout, Smith Voc baseball beats Gateway 7-0

The visiting Smith Vocational baseball team scored two runs in the first inning, and that was all the Vikings would need as Kaleb Jorritsma threw a gem on the mound. Jorritsma gave up just two hits and struck out 12 in a complete-game shutout, then reached base four times and added two RBIs at the plate to lead Smith Voc to a 7-0 win over Gateway on Monday afternoon.

Five different Vikings hitters recorded RBIs in the victory, with Corey Kirkendall driving in a pair along with Jorritsma. Gavin Kukucka (two singles), James Lavallee and Jared Baer each drove in a run for Smith Voc, while Pat Millin (two runs, one hit), Baear, Lavallee, Jorritsma, Kukucka and Lucas Lussier all scored runs. John Peters tallied a hit for the Vikings as well.

Theo Deangelis-Page and Jacob Maynard had the two hits – both singles – for the Gators. Maynard put forth a strong pitching effort despite the loss, tossing five innings and striking out 11 on just four hits.

Smith Voc led 4-0 through five innings and added three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Pioneer 8, Hopkins 5 — Chace Earle rocketed a three-run home run in the third to give the Golden Hawks a 4-3 lead but the Panthers responded with a three-run shot of their own to ultimately earn a victory in Northfield on Monday. 

Nate Rickles knocked an RBI single, Carter Styspeck singled and scored a run while Tucker Russell struck out six in the loss for Hopkins. 

Softball

Granby 5, SICS 1 — Tied 1-1 after four innings, the Rams put up three runs in the top of the fifth and added an isurance run in the sixth to defeat the Bulldogs on the road on Monday. Mabel Carillon gave up just four hits and struck out eight in the circle for Granby.

Kaitlyn Curran (two RBIs) and Alexis Lapite connected for two hits apiece while Ellie Szlosek (RBI) and Cassie Flaherty recorded hits. Carillon and Katie Grabherr also each had an RBI in the Rams’ win.

Turners Falls 11, Northampton 0 — The defending Div. 5 state champs looked like just that against the Blue Devils on Monday, as Northampton fell 11-0 on the road in its season opener.

Greta Lapore tallied the lone Blue Devils hit of the day.

Holyoke 16, Southwick 3 — The Purple Knights’ offense erupted on Monday, scoring 16 runs to cruise to a run-rule win over the Rams on the road.

Holyoke hosts Ware on Thursday looking to improve to 2-0.

Smith Vocational 23, Gateway 5 — Over three touchdowns’ worth of runs came off the Vikings bats on Monday, as they raced out to a lead and never looked back in their season opener on the road in Huntington.

Gateway was able to manage five runs, but it wasn’t nearly enough to match the potent Smith Voc attack.

Monument Mountain 19, Amherst 2 — Corinne Charlebois scored both Hurricanes runs in a five-inning loss in the Berkshires on Monday afternoon.

Charlebois tallied a pair of singles, Eve Jacoby singled and Maggie Collins reached base twice via walk for Amherst.

Boys lacrosse

Amherst 11, Westfield 7 — Four ‘Canes players scored at least two goals, with Tri Nguyen’s four-piece leading the way. Nguyen also added four assists while Sawyer Ferro scored two goals and recorded two assists and both Spencer MacDonald and Brian Cruz posted two goals and one assist in Monday’s win.

Kyle Uysal scored a goal and had an assist, and Jason Kim made a dozen key saves in between the pipes for Amherst.

Granby 15, Chicopee Comp 5 — The Rams bounced back from a 10-goal loss in their season opener with a 10-goal win in game No. 2, which came under the lights at South Hadley High School.

Fifteen goals were plenty to give Granby its first win of 2025 as it tripled up on the Colts Monday night.

Girls lacrosse

Granby 17, Monson 4 — It was a complete team performance from the Rams on Monday afternoon, as Kalli White led the way with seven goals in a game in which 10 different Granby players recorded a point.

Kelly-Lynn Kennedy had a stellar eight-point day (four goals, four assists), Ava-Elizabeth Loughman and Mylin Laliberte each scored a pair of goals and Molly Zumbruski dished out three assists in the victory. Faith Ramos stopped five shots in the cage for the Rams.

Pope Francis 12, Hampshire 6 — The Raiders hung toe-to-toe with the Cardinals in the first half, as they went into intermission tied at four, but Pope Francis turned it on to hand Hampshire a 12-6 defeat.

Emmie Collins scored two goals to pace the Raiders while Reese O’Connell, Ryleigh Fennessy, Mary Thibault and Breighlyn O’Brien all added a goal. Kailee Roncone and Emma Erikson combined for 10 saves in goal.

Amherst 13, Central 1 — Kiko Bhowmik tallied four goals and two assists while Claire Kennedy added a hat trick of her own, leading the Hurricanes to a monster win over Central on Monday.

Sylvie Walker (two), Zoey Candito (two), Emilia Luetjen and Ava Carey all scored goals for Amherst and Eden Polak saved two of the three Golden Eagles shots in goal.

Boys volleyball

Belchertown 3, Ludlow 0 — The Orioles grinded out a 29-27 second-set win that ultimately propelled them to a straight-set sweep over Ludlow on Monday evening.

Set scores were 25-20, 29-27, 25-15.

Gabriel Ibekilo put down a team-high eight kills, Noah Yankson (three aces) had six kills and Brian Burns collected five. Colin Mullin (17) and Nicholas Ibekilo (11) combined for 28 assists in Belchertown’s win.

Frontier 3, Minnechaug 2 — The Redhawks’ first win of the season didn’t come easily. 

Frontier won the opening two sets, dropped the ensuing two but were able to rally in the fifth set to come away with a 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-27, 15-11 triumph at Goodnow Gymnasium on Monday. 

Nate Rivera finished with 18 kills and 13 digs, Tegan Dexter put down 12 kills to go along with three aces and 12 digs, Will Petrin cracked five kills while Tavo Vincent-Warner dished 36 assists to go along with eight digs in the winning effort.
